CARFAX or VinAudit — what's the difference?
CARFAX can include reported accidents, service, and ownership information. VinAudit provides NMVTIS title, brand, odometer, and junk, salvage, or total-loss records. Coverage varies by VIN. Neither report proves a car is damage-free.

Additional records vary by VIN and provider coverage
Useful for screening title risks. NMVTIS is not a complete accident or maintenance history.
Use VinAudit to look for reported title risks, or CARFAX for available accident and service history. Compare the records with the seller’s documents and an inspection. Shopping more than one car? Multi-report packs drop the price per report.
CARFAX can include reported collisions and damage. VinAudit’s NMVTIS data includes reported total-loss and salvage information, not every collision.
Title brands and salvage
Salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt, and lemon titles from state DMV records.
Odometer and mileage
Compare available reported readings with the odometer. Gaps in the records may prevent a mileage issue from being detected.
Owners and usage
CARFAX can include reported ownership and personal, rental, or fleet use. The details available vary by VIN.

Questions buyers ask
What is VinAudit, and how is it different from CARFAX?
VinAudit provides NMVTIS title, brand, odometer, and reported junk, salvage, or insurance total-loss records. CARFAX can include reported accident, service, and ownership information from its network. Coverage varies by VIN; NMVTIS is not a complete collision or maintenance history.
Which one should I buy?
Choose based on the question: VinAudit for available NMVTIS title and total-loss records, or CARFAX for reported accidents, service, and ownership information. Review the sample reports and current options before buying. Neither report can rule out all damage or fraud; inspect the vehicle and check the seller’s documents.
What if there is no report for my VIN?
After you submit payment, we verify your card and confirm a report exists for that VIN before we charge you. If nothing is on file, checkout shows an error and you are not charged — you can switch to the other provider and try again.
Do I need an account?
No. Enter a VIN or plate and buy. We save the vehicle to a garage for you in the background so you can come back to the report later, and you can add a login any time.
Can I look up a car by license plate?
Yes. Pick the License plate tab, enter the plate and state, and we resolve it to a VIN before checking report availability.
Is this a subscription?
Buying a report is a one-time charge — nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. VINDecoded Plus, our optional membership with reports included every month, is separate and cancels with one click.
Check the VIN before you hand over the money
Most buyers spend more on a tank of gas than on the report that would have warned them.
