A VIN encodes the maker and country (characters 1–3), the model, body and engine (4–8), a check digit (9), the model year (10), the assembly plant (11) and the serial number (12–17). Matching it to government and manufacturer records adds recalls, safety ratings, complaints and factory equipment.

Look through the windshield at the driver’s side of the dashboard, or open the driver’s door and read the sticker on the door jamb. It’s also printed on the title, the registration and most insurance cards.
