Where the information comes from
- The VIN itself: its characters encode the maker and country, the model, body and engine, the model year, the assembly plant and the serial number.
- NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: recalls, crash-test ratings, owner complaints, defect investigations and manufacturer communications.
- IIHS, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: crash-test ratings.
- Licensed automotive data providers: specs, factory equipment, market values, maintenance schedules and cars for sale.
- Vehicle history reports come from established history report providers.
Not every accident or problem gets reported, so have a used car inspected before you buy it.
