VIN decoder questions

Do different makes need different VIN decoders?

Every vehicle sold in the US since 1981 uses the same 17-character standard, but what the characters mean is manufacturer-specific — the model codes, engine characters, and plant codes all differ by make. Our decoder applies the right manufacturer tables automatically, and the make pages explain the brand-specific details.

What does a VIN decode show?

The factory build: year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, plant, and equipment — plus open safety recalls for that exact VIN. It does not show accidents or owners; that requires a vehicle history report.

Is the VIN lookup free for every make?

Yes. The decode is free for all makes with no account or credit card — cars, trucks, EVs, motorcycles, and powersports vehicles with a standard 17-character VIN.

Can I decode motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides?

Yes — Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, and Polaris VINs use the same 17-character standard as cars and decode normally. Boats and personal watercraft use hull identification numbers instead, which this tool does not cover.
