How to read a Jeep VIN

The first three characters (the WMI) identify the manufacturer and where the vehicle was built. Common Jeep prefixes:

1C4

Jeep vehicles built in the United States — Wrangler, Grand Cherokee

3C4

Jeep vehicles built in Mexico — Compass

1J4

Jeep vehicles built in the United States (pre-2011)

Every Wrangler and Gladiator is built in Toledo, Ohio; the plant character and 1C4 prefix confirm it, which matters against gray-market rebuilds.

Jeeps hold value unusually well, so VIN checks for title brands and open recalls are standard practice before any used purchase.

Jeep VIN questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Jeep?

The most reliable spots: Driver-side dashboard, visible through the windshield; Driver-side door jamb sticker (also carries the PNT paint code); Title, registration, and insurance documents. All show the same 17-character VIN — if they disagree with the title, do not buy the vehicle.

Can the VIN confirm a Rubicon or a special edition?

The decode expands the model characters into the exact trim — Sport, Sahara, Rubicon — and the factory equipment. Decals are cheap; the factory build data tied to the VIN is the reliable check.

What about Jeeps older than 1981?

The 17-character standard began with the 1981 model year. Older CJs use shorter serial numbers that this decoder does not cover — for classic Jeeps the frame and body tags are the reference instead.

Is the Jeep VIN decoder free?

Yes. The full Jeep decode — year, model, trim, engine, factory equipment, and open recalls — is free with no account or credit card. Paid CARFAX or VinAudit reports are optional and add accident, title, and ownership history.
