Factory build data from manufacturer and government sources

How to read a Tesla VIN

The first three characters (the WMI) identify the manufacturer and where the vehicle was built. Common Tesla prefixes:

5YJ

Tesla vehicles built in Fremont, California

7SA

Tesla vehicles built at Gigafactory Texas

LRW

Tesla vehicles built at Gigafactory Shanghai

XP7

Tesla vehicles built at Gigafactory Berlin

Character 4 is the model line — S, 3, X, or Y — and character 8 encodes the motor and drive configuration, which is how a dual-motor car shows up in the VIN.

The factory prefix matters on used Teslas: build plant correlates with battery pack chemistry on some Model 3/Y variants.

Tesla VIN questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Tesla?

The most reliable spots: Driver-side dashboard, visible through the windshield; Label at the bottom of the driver-side door pillar; In the Tesla app and on the touchscreen under Software. All show the same 17-character VIN — if they disagree with the title, do not buy the vehicle.

Can I tell if a Tesla is dual motor from the VIN?

Yes — character 8 of a Tesla VIN encodes the motor and drivetrain configuration, and the free decode spells out the drive type. It is the fastest way to verify a listing that claims Long Range or Performance without a test drive.

Which factory built my Tesla, and does it matter?

The first three characters tell you: 5YJ is Fremont, 7SA is Austin, LRW is Shanghai, XP7 is Berlin. On some Model 3 and Model Y variants the plant correlates with battery chemistry and trim details, so used buyers often check it.

Is the Tesla VIN decoder free?

Yes. The full Tesla decode — year, model, trim, engine, factory equipment, and open recalls — is free with no account or credit card. Paid CARFAX or VinAudit reports are optional and add accident, title, and ownership history.
