The first three characters (the WMI) identify the manufacturer and where the vehicle was built. Common Toyota prefixes:

Character 10 is the model year and character 11 the assembly plant, so two visually identical RAV4s can be told apart down to the factory.

Japan-built (J…) and North America-built (4T/5T…) Toyotas are built to the same specification, and reliability data does not show a consistent gap. The decode tells you the plant, which some buyers still like to know before purchasing.
C is the three-digit factory paint code (like 040 Super White or 1F7 Classic Silver) and TR is the interior trim code. The VIN decode confirms the factory color name; the C/TR plate has the exact codes for touch-up paint and interior parts.
