How to read a Toyota VIN

The first three characters (the WMI) identify the manufacturer and where the vehicle was built. Common Toyota prefixes:

JT

Toyota vehicles built in Japan

4T1

Toyota passenger cars built in Kentucky — most North American Camrys

5TD

Toyota SUVs and minivans built in the United States

5TF

Toyota trucks built in Texas — Tundra and Tacoma

A VIN starting with J means the vehicle was built in Japan; 4 or 5 means the United States — a common question for used Camrys and RAV4s.

Character 10 is the model year and character 11 the assembly plant, so two visually identical RAV4s can be told apart down to the factory.

Toyota VIN questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Toyota?

The most reliable spots: Driver-side dashboard, visible through the windshield; Driver-side door jamb plate (also carries the C/TR paint and trim codes); Title, registration, and insurance documents. All show the same 17-character VIN — if they disagree with the title, do not buy the vehicle.

Does a Japan-built Toyota VIN mean better quality?

Japan-built (J…) and North America-built (4T/5T…) Toyotas are built to the same specification, and reliability data does not show a consistent gap. The decode tells you the plant, which some buyers still like to know before purchasing.

What is the C/TR code on my Toyota door jamb?

C is the three-digit factory paint code (like 040 Super White or 1F7 Classic Silver) and TR is the interior trim code. The VIN decode confirms the factory color name; the C/TR plate has the exact codes for touch-up paint and interior parts.

Is the Toyota VIN decoder free?

Yes. The full Toyota decode — year, model, trim, engine, factory equipment, and open recalls — is free with no account or credit card. Paid CARFAX or VinAudit reports are optional and add accident, title, and ownership history.
