JYA
Yamaha motorcycles built in Japan
Decode any Yamaha VIN free — motorcycles, Grizzly ATVs, side-by-sides, and WaveRunners with a 17-character VIN — for the model, engine, and year.
Factory build data from manufacturer and government sources
The first three characters (the WMI) identify the manufacturer and where the vehicle was built. Common Yamaha prefixes:
Yamaha motorcycles built in Japan
Yamaha ATVs and side-by-sides built in the United States
Yamaha ATVs built in Japan
Yamaha motorcycles stamp the VIN into the steering head — always compare it to the title, since frame swaps and rebuilt salvage bikes are common in the used market.
Many US-market Grizzlys and Wolverines are built in Newnan, Georgia (5Y4); sport bikes come from Japan (JYA).

The most reliable spots: Steering head on motorcycles — stamped on the frame where the forks pass through; Frame rail near the left footwell or under the seat on ATVs; Title, registration, and insurance documents. All show the same 17-character VIN — if they disagree with the title, do not buy the vehicle.
Stamped into the right side of the steering head — turn the bars to see it. It also appears on a frame label. If the stamped VIN and title disagree, walk away; that is the classic sign of a frame swap or theft recovery.
ATVs and side-by-sides use the standard 17-character VIN and decode normally. Personal watercraft use a 12-character hull identification number (HIN) instead — a different standard this decoder does not cover.
